    Reducing causality to transmission.Max Kistler - 1998 - Erkenntnis 48 (1):1-25.
The idea that causation can be reduced to transmission of an amount of some conserved quantity between events is spelled out and defended against important objections. Transmission is understood as a symmetrical relation of copresence in two distinct events. The actual asymmetry of causality has its origin in the asymmetrical character of certain irreversible physical processes and then spreads through the causal net. This conception is compatible with the possibility of backwards causation and with a causal theory of time. Genidentity, (...)

How to spell out genuine relativism and how to defend indexical relativism.Max Kölbel - 2007 - International Journal of Philosophical Studies 15 (2):281 - 288.
It was the explicit aim of my paper ‘Indexical Relativism versus Genuine Relativism’ to ‘characterize and compare’ (p. 297) two different forms of relativism. One form, exemplified by Harman’s and Dreier’s moral relativism (Harman, 1975 and Dreier, 1990), involves the claim that certain sentences express different propositions in different contexts of utterance, much like indexical sentences – hence the name ‘indexical relativism’. The other form involves the claim that the truth-value of certain contents or propositions depends on certain non-standard parameters, (...)

The Philosophy of Transhumanism.Max More - 2013 - In Max More & Natasha Vita‐More (eds.), The Transhumanist Reader. Oxford: Wiley. pp. 3–17.
To write of “the” philosophy of transhumanism is a little daring. The growth of transhumanism as a movement and philosophy means that differing perspectives on it have formed.

Political Education for a Polity of Dissensus.David Kettler - 2002 - European Journal of Political Theory 1 (1):31-51.
The aim of this article is to state a case for Karl Mannheim as an interlocutor no less important than Michael Oakeshott for an inquiry into the manner and purpose of teaching politics. Beginning with Max Weber, I develop an account of Karl Mannheim as a prime contender for Weber's legacy in political education, along with two contemporaries, Albert Salomon and Hans Freyer, whose contrasting appropriations of the legacy will highlight important elements that distinguish Mannheim's approach from the stereotype (...)

    Discursive logic towards a logic of rational discourse.Max Urchs - 1995 - Studia Logica 54 (2):231 - 249.
Both logic and philosophy of science investigate formal aspects of scientific discourse, i.e. properties of (non-monotonic) consequence operations for discursive logic. In the present paper we handle two of them: paraconsistency and enthymematycity.

    On the logic of event-causation jaśkowski-style systems of causal logic.Max Urchs - 1994 - Studia Logica 53 (4):551 - 578.
Causality is a concept which is sometimes claimed to be easy to illustrate, but hard to explain. It is not quite clear whether the former part of this claim is as obvious as the latter one. I will not present any specific theory of causation. Our aim is much less ambitious; to investigate the formal counterparts of causal relations between events, i.e. to propose a formal framework which enables us to construct metamathematical counterparts of causal relations between singular events. This (...)

For the sake of multifacetedness. Why artificial intelligence patient preference prediction systems shouldn’t be for next of kin.Max Tretter & David Samhammer - 2023 - Journal of Medical Ethics 49 (3):175-176.
In their contribution ‘Ethics of the algorithmic prediction of goal of care preferences’1 Ferrario et al elaborate a from theory to practice contribution concerning the realisation of artificial intelligence (AI)-based patient preference prediction (PPP) systems. Such systems are intended to help find the treatment that the patient would have chosen in clinical situations—especially in the intensive care or emergency units—where the patient is no longer capable of making that decision herself. The authors identify several challenges that complicate their effective development, (...)

The Proactionary Principle.Max More - 2013 - In Max More & Natasha Vita‐More (eds.), The Transhumanist Reader. Oxford: Wiley. pp. 258–267.
In the past, it was possible to approach transhumanism as primarily involving philosophical discussion and technological speculation. While transhumanist goals such as radical life extension, uploading, and cognitive, sensory, and physical enhancement were speculative they were also considered scientifically feasible, even if the technologies to achieve those goals appeared remote.

The ontological motivations for the theory of descriptions.Max Rosenkrantz - 2005 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 86 (1):114–134.
In this paper I argue that Russell's “On Denoting” is a work in ontology, not the philosophy of language or logic. Specifically, I claim that it addresses two ontological problems: (1) What is the proper analysis of the truth‐makers for sentences containing definite descriptions? (2) What is the proper analysis of the connection between those sentences and their truth‐makers?

Perspectives on digital twins and the (im)possibilities of control.Max Tretter - 2021 - Journal of Medical Ethics 47 (6):410-411.
In his contribution, ‘Represent me: please! Towards an ethics of digital twins in medicine’1, Braun shows that there is a fundamental ambivalence inherent in digital twins: they can either open up new freedoms for the simulated persons, or, conversely, endanger and restrict their freedom. To prevent digital twins from restricting people’s freedom, Braun suggests a strong focus on control. Braun’s focus on control is insufficient, I will argue, because his idea of control works only retroactively: it can only react to (...)
